Sad, sad, sad... So sad.
Mike Wieringo passed away on Sunday. I just read the news on Newsarama. And I'm down, broken, sad, almost sick.
Mike was one hell of a nice guy. A true gent. We could have been friends. We would have been if we hadn't been an ocean away from each other. I had the privilege to meet him and spend some really good time with him. I even worked on a Tellos tale. I also helped him on one of his superman comics. Shit I'm gonna miss you, big guy. A lot.
Todd and Mike in Angoulème a few years back... We had a blast there together!
And a piece I did for Tellos...

The silver Surfer - My work process
I'm taking 5 minutes to let you in on my work process for a Cosmic Patrouille page. Isn't that nice of me? :)
1) I get the idea for the gag. Don't ask me how that's done. It just comes out of the blue most of the time. I discuss it with my editor then I move on to...
2) The roughing of the idea. I do it directly in Photoshop these days with my Wacom tablet. It's also the part where I write the dialogues and such. The dialogues are done with a blambot font I bought (Lint Mc Cree) Here's where the pure essence of the page comes to life.
3) From there on I print out the rough in light blue on simple paper and I start to tighten it up. Getting more precise and fixing the glitches. That part is done with an Artline 0.4 faxblack.
4) I then print the whole thing again, but blown up to A3, on drawing paper (Steinbach) this time. I tighten some pieces that need it and ink the page with Artlines of different sizes. Mostly 0.1 and 0.4
5) I scan the page and clean it up in Photoshop. Panel frames are also done in Photoshop. On this particular page, the "Kirby crackles" were done directly in Photoshop. It's way much easier that way and it saves me valuable time.
6) I move on to the coloring. Once again under Photoshop. And the page is finished.
The whole process takes me between 6 and 12 hours work depending on the complexity of the page of course.
Enjoy !
